We were delighted to be invited for a second time, to be guest speakers at Tyne Metropolitan College. Ian Morrall, Managing Director at Dyson Energy Services, delivered presentations to Engineering and Construction students in one of the college’s lecture theatres. This forms part of our commitment to raise awareness of the energy-saving work our industry delivers and educate students on the scale of the green career opportunities within it.

The energy efficiency industry

The energy efficiency industry was created to combat climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, tackle fuel poverty and support householders in reducing their energy bills.

In response to the climate change crisis, the UK Government released their Net Zero Strategy, which set out policies and proposals for decarbonising all sectors of the UK economy, to meet the net zero target by 2050.

Decarbonising residential buildings is key to achieving net zero and building a sustainable environment for future generations. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) advise that residential buildings contribute to up to 23% of the greenhouse gas emissions. This highlights the importance of improving the fabric efficiency and changing the way we heat our homes.

Furthermore, National Energy Action estimate that there are currently 8.8 million households in fuel poverty which is predicted to rise to over 10 million in January, when the energy price cap is due to increase again.

As a national installer of energy efficiency measures, we alongside our colleagues across our industry, are instrumental not only in supporting the government achieve its net zero aspirations and targets, but also giving households a longer-term solution to their soaring energy bills.

With the current economic crisis, a spotlight has been shone on the task we have as a nation, to insulate inefficient leaky homes, to change the way we heat our homes, so we are less reliant on fossil fuels and ultimately improve their energy efficiency performance.

Skills gap and labour shortage within the energy efficiency industry

To meet this demand and to achieve government targets, the industry need the right people with the right skillsets. It is well known that there is a skills gap and a labour shortage, and together we need to look at ways we can overcome these challenges.

At Dyson Energy Services, we want to play our part in helping to bridge that skills gap by educating young people on the opportunities. That’s why we were delighted to be given the opportunity to present to students at Tyne Metropolitan College.

By engaging with students, we have also been able to gain valuable insight. Many students were unaware of what the energy efficiency industry is, the work we deliver and the career opportunities within it. Which makes it even more important, to encourage students to relate the skills they are learning on their courses with the skills required for green jobs within our field. There are career opportunities across the broad mix of energy-saving measures, including Solar PV Roof Installers, Electricians, Cavity Wall Technicians and many more.

Ian Morrall, Managing Director at Dyson Energy Services, presented to students on what the energy efficiency industry is, the energy efficiency landscape and talked about his own personal career journey over 42 years.
