Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your role at TrustMark

I lead the hardworking and dedicated TrustMark team, supported by an independent Board in the delivery of our core objective which is to ensure quality, compliance and customer protection across the home-improvement and retrofit sectors. My career spans over 40 years, starting out as a domestic gas engineer and progressing over the years to various corporate and leadership roles across the energy and construction sector until joining TrustMark as CEO in 2014. The following year, the findings from the Each Home Counts (EHC) Review were implemented, expanding TrustMark’s remit to include Repair, Maintenance & Improvement (RMI); Retrofit and Energy Efficiency Measures. This was to enhance the protection and choice available to consumers wanting to improve the energy performance of their homes. This work continues and we’re now gearing up for ECO4 in 2023 with other exciting projects in the pipeline to improve customer protection and help address the ongoing issues relating to supply chain and skills shortage. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and riding motorbikes. My main claim to fame is that Ayers Rock (now known as Uluru) was named after my great, great Grandfather who was Governor of Southwestern Australia.

Q: Why is improving your home’s energy efficiency so important?

With fuel bills at the forefront of most people’s minds, the obvious reason to improve energy efficiency in your home is to save money. However, we still need to be mindful of protecting the environment and if you consider that our homes use approximately 35% of all the energy in the UK and emit 20% of the carbon dioxide emissions, then the argument for energy efficiency improvements becomes even more compelling.

Q: Who is TrustMark?

TrustMark is a not-for-profit social enterprise operating within a Master Licence Agreement issued by the Government’s Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We licence and audit over 37 scheme providers (including the IAA) covering over 150 trade and service types ranging from plumbers, electricians and builders to carpet cleaners and landscape gardeners.

Q: Why was TrustMark set up?

TrustMark was established jointly by the Government to help cut down on the then high levels of unscrupulous individuals and businesses working in the domestic trades industries causing detriment to consumers.
