The history of Dyson through the decades
This year is a milestone year for Dyson Energy Services, as we celebrate 40 years in the energy efficiency industry. We want to mark this special year, by taking a moment to reflect on the Dyson story which has led to us becoming a leading national installer of energy efficiency measures.
Dyson in the 1980’s
Dyson Insulations Limited was first established in 1982, the year Michael Jackson released his ground-breaking album “Thriller”. Dyson began life primarily installing loft insulation into new build properties for major housebuilders.
We saw the opportunity for growth in serving people in social and private communities, therefore expanded its service offering to include energy efficiency measures such as cavity wall insulation and external wall insulation.
Shortly after, the Dyson Distribution Division was born, supplying a range of roof, wall and floor insulation products to housebuilders, builders and merchants.
Dyson in the 90’s
In a time known for the rise of the internet, which would pave the way to a future change in the way we communicate, Dyson was expanding its geographical coverage from the North into the Midlands.
The 1990’s was a pivotal decade for the energy efficiency industry, as the first Government energy efficiency scheme, Standards of Performance (SOP), was launched. The scheme was introduced at the time to increase the energy efficiency of UK housing stock, reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. In fact, this scheme was the first of its kind and pathed the way forward for future schemes like CERT, CESP and ECO.
The 1990’s was a busy time for Dyson. Not only was it the time that consumer awareness and demand skyrocketed for energy-saving products, partly brought about by the SOP scheme, but Dyson opened the doors to a new division. The Specialist Products division opened and began to manufacture bespoke insulation products to meet customer requirements.
Dyson in the noughties
The noughties were another significant time for Dyson, as we expanded our geographical coverage. We grew from a local installer of insulation measures to a national installer, with coverage across England and Wales. The business also began operating up to and across the Scottish central belt.
Not only did we expand our geographical coverage, but our service offering too. It was in the noughties, that the national Heating Division was first formed, which enabled the business to offer boiler replacements, full central heating systems and heating upgrades to domestic customers across the country. This was a significant time for Dyson, with skilled Heating Engineers and Electricians, directly employed within our infrastructure to support the delivery.
Our recognisable blue and orange brand colours
The original beige and brown company livery was exchanged for a vibrant blue and orange.
The blue and orange brand colours, which are so recognisable today, were born from a concept that the colours symbolised the impact insulation and heating measures had on householder’s homes – from cold to warm.
The Teenies
Having been founded in 1982 primarily installing loft insulation to new build properties and throughout the decades expanding to deliver national coverage and a wider range of energy efficiency measures, Dyson Insulations didn’t reflect the evolved brand.
Therefore, in the teenies, we rebranded to Dyson Energy Services.
Dyson didn’t stop there
A national renewables division was launched, with the introduction of renewable measures such as solar, now a valued addition to our service portfolio. This allowed Dyson to take a whole house approach to consumers energy efficiency needs.
Dyson Energy Services became part of the Duality Group
In 2016 Dyson Energy Services became part of the Duality Group, later joined by sister company Gas Call Services. Together, this strengthened our position as a leader in the insulation and heating private and social housing sectors, throughout the UK. This acquisition and partnership enabled us to offer our customers a whole house approach in home energy savings.
